World War 2 (ww2 wwii)

A Nation at War (world war 2 ww2 wwii)
From the bombing of the US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, through the final surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945, America was effected by World War 2 like no other event in it's history.

The number of Americans in uniform during World War 2 exceeded 16,000,000, and most of the industry of the nation was turned to the production of the ships, planes and other equipment required to fight a war of global scope.

United States military personnel were involved in World War 2 from the tropical islands of the Philippines, Guam, Okinawa and Tarawa, to more familiar European places, including Belgium, England, France, Holland, Germany, and Italy. US forces fought in the deserts of Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, to the frigid wastes of the Northern Atlantic. US flyers participated in this war to an unprecedented extent, and the United States Navy grew to limits never imagined prior to War World 2.

World War 2 (ww2 wwii) Casualties
World War 2 casualties were severe. 405,399 died of all causes, and 670,845 were wounded. 130,201 Americans were captured and made Prisoners of War (POWs).

Losses were extremely heavy in the fall of the Philippines in 1942, over the skies of Germany from 1943-1945, in the Ardennes Forest in December of 1944 (the Battle of the Bulge) and on the Pacific islands of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. World War 2 casualties were also severe in the landings at Sicily and along the coast of Italy, and in the bloody battles across western Germany to the Rhine and beyond in the spring of 1945. Thousands of Americans were killed and wounded in the D-Day landing of June 6, 1944, and the subsequent fight in the fields of France. Naval casualties were extensive in battles against the German U-Boat fleet in the Atlantic, and against the Japanese Navy at such locations as Midway, the Coral Sea, Guadalcanal, and the Aleutians.
